Hi Kimberley, thanks for your feedback. We are in the process of drawing up a mobile strategy for the university and you have hit upon one of the key factors that we'd like to address - responsive web design for the portal and the uni websites. Responsive web design means that there would be a mobile friendly version of our sites when you accessed them on a mobile device. This is possible for the main uni sites and is being worked on, and the portal is under review and hopefully will be rebuilt with a responsive design to make access on mobile devices better. We're also working on developing mStir (m.stir.ac.uk) all the time to get as much functionality on it as possible. Did you know that you should be able to access Listen Again lecture recordings for your module on it? Thanks for your comments though, it's good to know that we are heading in the direction that students want us to go :)

hi Joshua, Yes you're right the Kindle will not work on our network as all our connections go via the VPN (CampusNet). Unfortunately not every device is VPN enabled and the Kindle is one of those. The vast majority of tablets however, will work. Our CampusNet setup is however being reviewed over the next year so we will take your feedback into account.

Works great on my phone. However, when I tried to use it connection to my tablet device, which is a kindle fire it did not work. It would seem that the university network does not cater for such devices as it is VPN protected. This has hindered my usage of a tablet which would have greatly helped in my studying

I tend to use my laptop when I come into uni because there is always a shortage f computers but when I don't have it with me or I am just wanting to check information quickly I use the internet on my phone.
An app for the portal would be really useful that could like to the blackboard app (which personally I don't think is that great and col be improved)
I also think that this would improve learning as you could listen to recorded lectures as you would a pod cast to and from campus.

hiEvan
Information Services have submitted spending proposals to the University for development of the data network including expansion, upgrading and replacement of existing equipment. Replacement of the network switches in the chalets are included in the proposals. The spending plans are awaiting approval. So fingers crossed :)

I'll be living in chalets (Spittal Hill) next year and it would be great if the equipment could be upgraded to allow this access.

Hi Hazel

I’m sorry you can’t make these classes. At the moment we don’t have any other classes scheduled in our Library.

But RefWorks themselves are running a live webinar “Using RefWorks to Quickly Import Citations and Write a Paper (30 minutes)” which would be useful instead. To attend a webinar (a seminar over the web) you need a computer or laptop connected to the internet and either speakers or headphones to hear the presenter. There are 2 alternative times:
Tuesday 2nd April 7pm https://refworks.webex.com/refworks/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=711771941
or Wed 23rd April 3pm https://refworks.webex.com/refworks/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=717827404

You need to register in advance to attend the webinar – use the links above.

If you can’t make either of those times – you can watch a previous class that’s been recorded – see the Event Recordings section at https://refworks.webex.com/refworks/onstage/g.php?p=3&t=m

Or if you prefer you can request a tutorial for yourself at: http://www.stir.ac.uk/is/student/help/#lib

See also we have lots of help on our pages at: http://www.stir.ac.uk/is/student/it/software/refworks/

Particularly helpful for an introduction are:
RefWorks Mini Guide giving simplified instructions for popular tasks: http://www.stir.ac.uk/media/schools/is/documents/RefWorksMiniGuide2.0.pdf
Refworks Quick Start Guide giving an overview of what RefWorks can do http://www.stir.ac.uk/media/schools/is/documents/RefWorks_QSG_Eng_Custom.pdf
Importing from Databases and Reading List Software http://www.stir.ac.uk/media/schools/is/documents/referencing/Importing%20References%20to%20RefWorks.pdf
