We have been informed by the builders that they will be drilling in the Studies Area (s19) and also on Level 1 this week. The areas of the Library closest to these areas will therefore be the noisiest.

Ear plugs are available on request from the service desks.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

New Library Project Manager

All staff and students are invited to our open meetings to discuss the New Library Project and the Interim Library Service.

Wednesday 22 April: 2pm in Lecture Theatre A1
OR
Friday 1 May: 10:30am in Cottrell Room 2B85

This will be your opportunity to ask questions about the Library Project, and also the Interim service which will run while the building work is done on the main library building from July 2009-August 2010.

Find out more about the Project on our website and see our Facebook page for photos and discussion topics including study accommodation during the Interim Library, your views on self issue and your favourite bits of the old Library building.

The following are a selection from the suggestion cards that have recently been received at the Stirling campus library. If you have any suggestions or comments you can always email the library (library@stir.ac.uk) or fill in a suggestion card.

  • Can you provide power points for laptops upstairs please – there is no where to plug in.

We will be providing power sockets for almost every study space in the refurbished Library because we appreciate the demand for them.  But it’s simply not cost-effective to do work on this scale to a building which only has months to live.

  • Don’t remove documents/books etc while people are writing dissertations.

Thanks for your suggestion.  You don’t say whether you have been inconvenience by the lack of resources or by noise, so I have tried to address both points.

We are, as you may already know, engaged in a significant review of the print collection in the library.  This has meant that we have had to remove from stock some runs of print material.  Most of these resources are available online (our preferred method for accessing journal material), so you should still be able to access the titles you require.  If this is not the case, then, because you are a postgraduate, the Document Delivery Service is available to you and we will source the relevant material for you from another library.

image of bookWe are being asked to carry out the work on the collections in a very short time frame of only a few months, this has, regrettably, required us to be removing and relocating stock during semester.  While we have tried to minimise this (the main decant projects will take place in the vacations), library staff will be working in the collections more than would normally be the case.  That said, we tend to be working in selected areas of the library and there should always be a quiet corner away from any ongoing works.  We will also be publicising the main decant process in June and July of this year, so as to give you advance notice of which parts of the building to avoid.

  • Increase the number of pop loans for students 3/4 yr.  6 isn’t enough when tutors expect 12 references each essay.

We will be looking again at loan allocations particularly with reference to the Interim Library Service, and will carefully consider your suggestion.  The possible drawback is that if the week-loan allocation is greater, then the books you would like to borrow may already be on loan to another student.

The Library Catalogue, and associated services, will be unavailable during the mid-semester break on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th April 2009.

This is to allow the Library Catalogue computer system to be migrated to a new server.

The following services will be unavailable:

  • Access to the Library Catalogue
  • Automated borrowing, returning or renewal of books
  • Access to your “My Library Record”, therefore you will be unable to renew books, view your Reading History, etc.
  • WebBridge links in library databases will not work
  • Links from TalisList Reading Lists to the Library Catalogue will not work

We apologise for the inconvenience; there is no ideal time to carry out this work, we hope that by scheduling it during the mid-semester break this will minimise the disruption caused.

Bibliographic Services Manager

From 27th April until 29th May 2008 the Library will offer extended opening.
The Library will offer 24-hour opening apart from Friday and Saturday nights when it will close at 7pm and re-open at 9am the following morning.

During the additional hours, i.e. from 10pm – 9am Monday – Thursday nights, 4pm – 7pm Saturday and 4pm – 9am Sunday night the building will be staffed by security only, with no Library staff.

Automated services including internet access, self-issue, self-return, printing and photocopying will be available, but with no technical support. The Information Centre will not be open.

Throughout this period which will act as a pilot, use will be monitored and students canvassed for their views on the service. This information will be fed into the new library project.

Building work is now in progress on Level 1 of the Library and also in the Studies Area (s19). This is the first phase of the work being done as part of the New Library project.  See our web page for more info on the project.

The quietest areas of the Library will therefore be those furthest away from Level 1 and furthest away from the Loch end of the building.

Ear plugs are available on request from service desks if required.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Love reading? Always promised yourself that you’d read one of the classics of literature? To celebrate World Book Day on 5th March, the Stirling Campus Library has a display of classic literature close to the Library entrance. All books on display can be borrowed as usual at the Lending Services Desk.

Once you have read the book, tell us (and the world) what you thought of it, by using our “rate a book” feature in the library catalogue. Simply find the catalogue record for the book, click on rating, fill in your score and the results will be averaged and displayed for all to see. Happy reading!
